the results are in

The results from our twin zygosity DNA test came yesterday! Since I was absolutely spellbound and Wyn was otherwise occupied, Mom and Dad let me open them. Here they are (drumroll please):

Yippee! We knew it. Here are some facts about monozygotic twins:
  • While the rate of dizygotic (fraternal) twinning is about 21.9 per 1,000 births in the U.S., there are only 4 sets of monozygotic (identical) twins per 1,000 births.
  • The monozygotic birth rate is consistent throughout the world and does not appear to share any of the known influences for dizygotic twinning (maternal age, genetic and racial predisposition, infertility treatments, etc.). So...even though Mom has a history of twins in her family and she was no spring chicken when she had us at 34, the fact that we're twins is, statistically speaking, a random miracle.
  • Although Wyn and I are genetically the same (originating from a single fertilized egg) and will always be similar in physical appearance, intellectual abilities, temperament and so on, we still have our own personalities and differences.
Thanks to everyone who voted in our online poll. Incredibly, you all got it right!
